Gender-affirming care, as defined by the World Health Organization, encompasses a range of social, psychological, behavioral, and medical interventions “designed to support and affirm an individual's gender identity” when it conflicts with the gender they were assigned at birth.
The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) provides training, community and visibility to promote the understanding of human sexuality and healthy sexual behavior.
The GALAP list is a resource meant to be shared with people who need letters to access gender affirming care from medical providers. Members of GALAP provide pro bono assessments and letters to people who are seeking our services solely for this purpose. As mental health providers, our ethics codes state that we should be providing some pro bono work. For clinicians who truly care about social justice, financial redistribution, and improved access to care, this is a way to align our values with our clinical practice.
